PSHE
Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education is an important and necessary part of all pupils’ education.
Here, at Clapham Manor Primary School, we value PSHE as one way to support children’s development as human beings, to enable them to understand and respect who they are, to empower them with a voice and to equip them for life and learning.
We teach the above content through the Jigsaw PSHE Programme, which offers us a comprehensive, carefully thought-through scheme of work which brings consistency and progression to our children’s learning in this vital curriculum area.
We include the statutory Relationships and Health Education (RHE) within our whole-school PSHE Programme.

To ensure progression and a spiral curriculum, we use Jigsaw, the mindful approach to PSHE, as our chosen teaching and learning programme and tailor it to children’s needs. The mapping document: Jigsaw 3-11 and statutory Relationships and Health Education (see link below) shows exactly how Jigsaw and therefore our school, meets the statutory Relationships and Health Education requirements.
This programme’s complimentary update policy ensures we are always using the most up to date teaching materials and that our teachers are well-supported.

Alongside our dedicated PSHE lessons, we recognise that PSHE is an integral part of school life and is taught and promoted across the whole school. We reinforce key messages through half-termly whole-school assemblies, workshops delivered by external organisations and age-appropriate activities and discussions. We also use mindfulness to help children develop an understanding of their emotions and learn strategies to support emotional regulation and wellbeing. Throughout the year, we celebrate and participate in events such as Children’s Mental Health Week, providing further opportunities for children to talk openly about their feelings, develop positive relationships and understand the importance of looking after their mental health. These opportunities help to ensure that PSHE is embedded within our school culture and that children are supported to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to thrive.
Whole-school approach
Jigsaw covers all areas of PSHE for the primary phase including statutory Relationships and Health Education. The table below gives the learning theme of each of the six Puzzles (units) and these are taught across the school; the learning deepens and broadens every year.

Relationships and Sex Education
At Clapham Manor Primary School, we believe children should understand the facts about human reproduction before they leave primary school. All pupils must be taught the aspects of sex education outlined in the primary science curriculum – this includes teaching about the main external parts of the human body, how it changes as it grows from birth to old age, including puberty, and the reproductive process in some plants and animals. Additionally, puberty is taught as a statutory requirement of Relationships, Sex and Health Education and covered by our Jigsaw PSHE Programme in the ‘Changing Me’ Puzzle (unit). Parents have the right to request their child be withdrawn from the two Relationships, Sex and Health Education lessons that explicitly teach conception:
Year 5, Lesson 4 (Conception)
Year 6, Lesson 3 (Conception, birth)
This should be done in writing to the school office: admin@cmps.acreschools.org
Parents are fully consulted in the organisation and delivery of our sex education curriculum, in accordance with the ‘Organisation of the curriculum’ and ‘Consultation with parents’ sections. Parents have the right to know what is taught in our school and when it is taught. Therefore, Jigsaw has created ‘Jigsaw Parent Access’. This gives you access to the content that your child is being taught in PSHE lessons and is available a half term in advance. You will need to firstly contact your child’s class teacher, who will provide you with a username and password to access this content online. Paper copies are also available on request. After you have requested and reviewed this information from the class teacher, if you would then like to have a further conversation about the curriculum, please contact Ms Floyd or Ms Moss (PSHE Leads) via the school office.
